Find yourself in Auckland and looking for gifts that are a little different, or food straight from the farmer, baker or fisherman? Head to any of these five markets and you won’t be disappointed.
1. Cassette Supermarkets
A recent addition to the craft market scene, the Cassette supermarket has a cool indie atmosphere, helped by the fact it’s located in the bar / nightclub, Cassette Number Nine. The free Becks (the market is sponsored by Becks) definitely helps to get people in, but it’s the amazing and cheap jewellery, vinyl, clothes and other handmade goodies that make people stick around for an hour or so.
Open 12pm – 5pm, every Saturday, inside Cassette Number Nine on Vulcan Lane.
Famous in Auckland, this weekly market is a foodies dream. The freshest produce and so much choice make this a popular Saturday destination. You can buy everything from eggs, bread, cakes, flowers, cheese, sauces, dips, vegetables, fruit.....the list is endless. A lovely place to spend a Saturday morning just browsing, tasting and indulging!
Open 8am – 12pm, every Saturday at the Jubilee Building car park, Parnell Road.
3. Devonport Craft Market
A real treat in historic Devonport, just a 10 minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, the Devonport Craft Market is held once a month. All types of beautiful handmade or vintage gifts can be found here, from candles, gingerbread men, children’s clothes, cupcakes, knits and jewellery. A good excuse to head over to the North Shore, and you can walk off the cupcakes with a wander around Devonport.
Open 10am – 2pm, 1st Sunday of every month, Devonport Community House, Clarence House, Devonport
Right in the heart of Auckland CBD, this farmers market sells the very best fresh produce from fish, vegetables, bread and olives, to food that can you eat as you browse (the Masala Dosa stall deserves a special mention!) and with a regular line up of buskers, the market has a nice festival atmosphere.
8.30am - 12.30pm, every Saturday, Britomart, Gore Street.
Another farmers market, the Grey Lynn farmers market is in lovely and vibrant suburb of Grey Lynn. It is held every Sunday, except the last Sunday of the month when the Kraft Bomb craft market is on instead. More fresh produce, so stock up on your veggies and breads then head out to the local bars or cafes and wind away the afternoon in this great area of Auckland.
9am -12.30pm every Sunday, Grey Lynn Community Centre, Richmond Road, Grey Lynn
